"Bobcat Fights to Stop Hunger" is a humanitarian project led by Trey Cochran, a 5th grade student, at Cielo Vista Elementary School in El Paso, TX, that is trying to raise $10,500 to package 35,000 meals for people in need with the help of nonprofit Numana.
Here's how it works: Kansas-based Numana hosts packaging events around the country, each with an assembly line-like setup. Volunteers fill bags with rice, beans, soy protein, vitamins and minerals, and pile the bags in boxes. Numana then sends the meals around the world.
Packaging events also benefit local food banks in the cities where they're held.
Each meal costs 30 cents to make, so Trey needs to raise $10,500 to bring Numana here and package 35,000 meals.
He also needs volunteers to pack meals during the event May 9 at his school.
So far, Trey has raised $3,127. He has until April 31 to raise the rest..
