The El Paso County Commissioners Court is seeking qualified applicants to serve as an at-large board member for El Paso's University Medical Center (UMC) Board of Managers. The application process is now open and closes on Thursday, April 3, 2014. All interested applicants should submit a board application and resume to the El Paso County Human Resources Department.
Per UMC bylaws, the following criteria will be considered when evaluating the individual's qualifications of potential Board members:
- Dedication
- Sufficient time and energy
- Financial and business expertise
- Integrity
- Specific skills or expertise needed by the Hospital District
- Ability to evaluate managerial skills
- Corporate and civic leadership
- Involvement in the community
- Flexibility
- Creativity
- Involvement in the Hospital District
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution of higher learning or the equivalent in work or business experience shall be required of all Board appointees
- Prior board experience
Absolute disqualifiers shall include the following:
- Unpaid and uncontested local property taxes
- Unpaid child support
- Any history of suing the hospital district as a plaintiff or plaintiff's attorney
- Conviction for a crime of moral turpitude or official misconduct
- Any revocations of professional license held by the potential appointee
UMC is El Paso's only not-for-profit, community-owned hospital, whose mission is to enhance the health and wellness of the region by making high quality, affordable healthcare services accessible to all. UMC is overseen by a seven-member panel called the Board of Managers with each member being appointed by the El Paso's County Judge and Commissioners. Each member serves a three year non-paid term and is charged with setting policy on behalf of UMC and its outpatient facilities.
UMC also serves as the primary teaching institution of the Texas Tech University's four-year Medical School in El Paso. As such, the University Medical Center of El Paso/Texas Tech campus is the only academic healthcare setting in far West Texas and Southern New Mexico and is home to the region's only Level 1 Trauma Center.
