Who We Are
Books Are GEMS is a 501c(3) organization whose mission is to inspire and empower families in our community. Since our humble beginnings in 2003, Books Are GEMS has served the literacy needs of the children of El Paso. Our children's bookstore has distributed over 1 million books at no cost to the families in our area.
What We Do
Programs:
1. Eight Free Books- every child who visits the storefront may take 8free books (7 used, 1 new). Teachers, homeschool parents, and those working with children may take up to 25 used books and unlimited teacher resources twice per year.
2. Mass Book Distribution: We cooperate with El Paso schools and organizations to provide free books to distribute to children through organized events.
3. Story times: Every Saturday at 11 am, GEMS hosts a story time. Several times per year we host children's authors who present their own book during this time.
Books are GEMS has given away 1,000,000 books to El Paso children over the past 15 years!
