Who We Are

Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA) is a non-profit organization that serves as the bridge between those who make the decision to donate their organs and tissues to those who need a lifesaving transplant. STA’s purpose is to save lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. We can accomplish our mission when all employees believe in our core values of being passionate, selfless team players. For more than 40 years, Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA) has been saving and enhancing lives by recovering donated organs and tissues for transplant. Founded in 1974, STA is among the largest of 58 federally designated, nonprofit organ procurement organizations (OPOs) in the United States. STA was the first freestanding, independent OPO in the United States. We were founded to facilitate kidney retrieval for Parkland Memorial Hospital. That first year, we recovered 13 organs from nine donors. Today, STA coordinates organ transplantation to patients in 11 transplant centers in our donor service area. Since STA was founded, we’ve recovered more than 23,000 organs and saved or enhanced the lives of more than 100,000 people.

What We Do

Southwest Transplant Alliance’s purpose is to save lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. STA is also committed to educating the public about the need for donation and the importance of donor registration by supporting the Donate Life Texas registry. Our caring and compassionate staff offers hope to those facing the devastating loss of a loved one. Our team also works in hospitals to guide grieving families through the organ and tissue donation process and to provide the clinical services needed to recover, prepare and transport organs and tissues for those awaiting a lifesaving transplant.
